Our mission is to ensure a strong, positive climate of breastfeeding promotion, education and support through continued coordination of activities utilizing varied resources and a cooperative network of community individuals, organizations and agencies.

History
The Breastfeeding Coalition of Palm Beach County was founded in 1992 in order to celebrate locally the "First Annual World Breastfeeding Week" sponsored by the World Alliance For Breastfeeding Action. The Coalition includesindividuals representing maternal/child health agencies, hospitals, childbirth educators, lactation consultants, non-profit organizations, businesses, health care professionals, and breastfeeding mothers. The Coalition has been active ever since and it has successfully completed many projects in our continuing effort to raise public awareness of the many benefits of breastfeeding.

Meeting Announcement
Monthly meetings of the Breastfeeding Coalition of Palm Beach County are held on the first Tuesday of every month at the Palm Beach County Health Department Clinic at Southwinds Drive, Lantana.

The Breastfeeding Coalition of Palm Beach County consists of a dynamic mix of volunteers and professionals who meet monthly to support and encourage breastfeeding in our community. Our monthly meetings are an opportunity to be informed on the latest research and evidence based practices, share expertise and challenges in following national guidelines, and build advocacy for breastfeeding families.

The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding - On January 20, 2011, Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin released The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding. http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/topics/breastfeeding/index.html

The American Academy of Pediatrics has released an updated policy statement on Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk in February Pediatrics which maintains that breastfeeding should be considered a public heath issue rather than a lifestyle choice. The policy statement not only addresses many of the health benefits to breastfeeding to babies and mothers, but also encourages hospitals and pediatricians how to help remove barriers which prevent successful breastfeeding. http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/early/2012/02/22/peds.2011-3552.full.pdf+html

The National Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality (NICHQ) is leading Best Fed Beginnings, an effort to help hospitals nationwide make quality improvements to maternity care to better support mothers and babies to be able to breastfeed with support from the CDC. This project will address the need to improve hospital practices to support breastfeeding by helping hospitals move toward Baby-Friendly status. http://www.nichq.org/our_projects/cdcbreastfeeding.html
